Single most powerful recommendation

Run a fixed, body-doubled application session with Michael, built on the gym routine. This is the one change that turns the plan into offers.

The strategy is not the problem. The CVs, shortlists and channels are all here. The bottleneck is volume: 1.4 applications a week against a 5 to 8 target, sent in bursts with multi-week silences, and nothing at all sent since 15 July. That pattern is textbook ADHD. Applications are the hardest task type for Vincent's brain: low dopamine, high planning load, delayed and uncertain reward, rejection baked in. More searching will not fix a starting problem. The bottleneck is initiation, so the fix is structure plus presence.

Amended 2026-09-14. This recommendation used to say volume was the only gap. The record no longer supports that. 29 applications have produced four interviews, at citizenM (second round), FitnessLab (first round), Akatoki and Marriott Canary Wharf (third round), and zero offers. A CV that reaches a third interview is working. There are two gaps, not one, and they need different fixes: initiation, fixed by the body-doubled session below, and conversion, fixed by interview rehearsal. The only named feedback on record is FitnessLab's, that Vincent lacked confidence and clients could pick it up, which is a conversion problem and has a working plan against it at jobs-vincent/confidence-plan.md. Volume still comes first, because there is nothing to convert without it, but do not expect volume alone to produce an offer.

Why a body-doubled session works

  • They already gym together about 5 times a week. It works because it is shared, scheduled, and Michael is there. Applications need the same scaffolding.
  • For ADHD the bottleneck is starting, not doing. A second person in the room removes the start barrier (body doubling).
  • Best window: straight after a morning gym session, when his ADHD medication (Vyvanse, taken in the morning) is active and both are already settled and connected.
  • Remove all decision load. Pre-pick the targets. Imperial London Hotels is the most active 4-star employer right now with several entry roles already shortlisted in the Pipeline. Batch-apply to those, do not browse.
  • Format: every weekday (Monday to Friday), 20 to 30 minutes, attached to the morning gym slot. One or two applications each day. Daily is easier to hold than 2 to 3, not harder: it removes the "is today a session day?" decision every morning, and it builds the Monday to Friday rhythm he will need on the job anyway. They already run a 5-day-a-week cadence at the gym, so the pattern is proven. Lower daily quota also means less to start, which suits the ADHD start barrier.

How Michael helps without it backfiring

  • Frame it as a shared appointment you both show up to, never a task you assign. Vincent is demand-sensitive, so an invitation lands where an instruction triggers the contrary reflex.
  • Sit alongside and do your own admin. Presence, not supervision. Do not check his work mid-session.
  • If a session gets missed, no correction, just rebook. Pressure feeds rejection sensitivity and stalls him further.
  • Protect the medication supply. Focus depends on it. Keep the ADHD clinic script current (flagged urgent in his health notes).

25 dated applications to date, plus one undated (FitnessLab PT). After the March burst there was a four-week gap (2026-03-30 to 2026-04-26), then a strong run through late April and May. The search restarted 2 Jul after a quiet fortnight and has produced four applications in two and a half weeks (Mandarin Oriental 30 Jun, President Luggage Porter 6 Jul, Sea Lanes 9 Jul, ASHK Sales Assistant 13 Jul). That is the most consistent stretch since May. Priority is keeping the weekly habit steady and lifting volume towards the 5-8 target via the body-doubled sessions.

Target tier: 4-star and below. Jumeirah, Shangri-La, Mandarin Oriental, and Dorchester Collection removed — build hotel experience first at 3-4 star, move to 5-star later.

PriorityRole typeWhy it fits VincentExamples
1 — Primary Guest Ambassador / Lobby Host / Guest Experience Agent citizenM-style ambassador role is the sweet spot — guest-facing, energy-led, not tied to PMS desk work. Warm presence, communication, service instinct. Directly analogous to private client management. Moxy, Aloft, Hoxton, Ace Hotel, Locke, Zedwell (citizenM dropped 6 Jul — two rejections)
2 — Strong Gym / health club Reception Rescoped 2026-09-21. Fitness delivery roles, personal training and gym floor instructing, are out of scope for now on Michael’s decision. Gym and health club reception is the track that stays open: front of house work in a sector Vincent knows, where the Cert III and IV read as credibility rather than as the job itself. Third Space Queen’s Park Club Receptionist is the shape to look for. Third Space, PureGym, Nuffield, Gymbox, hotel health clubs, reception desks only
3 — Strong Porter / Luggage Porter / Doorman Entry route at 4-star brands. Physical, service-focused, no PMS requirement. Gets foot in the door at named hotel properties. Bridge to front office progression. Imperial London Hotels, Hilton 4-star, DoubleTree, Crowne Plaza
4 — Open Piano — Teacher and/or Performer Grade 8 piano is a rare and credible qualification, and supports two separate income tracks, not one. Teaching: private/studio, no employer required, suits the self-employed model already in place. Performing: hotel lobby, restaurant, weddings, events — viable since the funeral performance showed anxiety is manageable on stage. Either or both can run alongside hotel work. Teaching: private clients, music schools, prep schools, online via Zoom. Performing: hotel lobbies/restaurants, weddings and private events, care homes and community events.
5 — Fallback F&B / Room Service / Banqueting & Events Events background from Melbourne. Transferable but not the target track unless other options are slow. Imperial, Hilton, Marriott F&B teams
The citizenM ambassador role was the right model — lobby-focused, energy-led, not a formal desk job. Replicate that search across lifestyle and design-led hotel brands at 4-star and below. Formal receptionist roles at traditional hotels are a lower priority.

Digital marketingDigital Marketing Officer at HospoSure Pty Ltd (voluntary, Jun 2026 to present). Content creation, social media, digital outreach.Added 2026-09-14 from vincent-profile.md, the one skill on that list missing here. Use it for the CV timeline, it keeps the present day covered while the search runs, and it is the basis of the Michael Roberts reference. Not a lead skill for fitness or front office roles.
LanguagesEnglish (fluent). Some Mandarin exposure (Singapore background — confirm level).Flag Mandarin if conversational or better — high value in London hotels with Asian guest demographics.
GapImpactHow to address
No hotel front office experienceBlocks many mid-tier and luxury receptionist rolesApply to 3-4 star hotels that train on PMS. Frame all guest-facing experience as directly relevant. Get one hotel role first — then move up.
No UK fitness registration (REPs / CIMSPA)No longer a live gapParked 2026-09-21. This blocked fitness delivery roles, which are now out of scope. Gym reception posts do not ask for REPs or CIMSPA, so the gap does not bite on the track that remains open. The ENIC confirmation of 2026-05-25 still stands and the registration stays available if the delivery track reopens.
Youth Mobility VisaSome employers will not sponsor or extendConfirm visa expiry. Mention right to work proactively if asked. Focus on employers comfortable with YMV (most London hotels are).
Self-employment gap 2023-presentSome employers read it as "no employer wanted them"Reframe clearly: "self-employed personal trainer — grew a private client base in Melbourne, relocated to London and continuing." Not a gap — a business.

Application Pipeline

Active, pending, and shortlisted roles
Packs now live in folders, 2026-09-14. Application packs are filed by role rather than loose in jobs-vincent/. A pack sits in jobs-vincent/active-applications/<role>/ from the moment Vincent commits to applying until the role closes, then the whole folder moves to jobs-vincent/previous-applications/ with the outcome recorded. Four roles are in active-applications as of today, none submitted yet: Imperial Guest Experience Porter, Imperial Doorman, W London Luggage Porter, and the Imperial Recruitment temp agency registration. Each folder’s README carries the closing date and the owner.
Pipeline cleaned 2026-09-14. Every application that passed its follow-up date with no response is now marked closed rather than left as Applied. That takes live applications awaiting a decision to zero: the top of this table is entirely roles still to apply for. The application packs for closed roles moved to jobs-vincent/previous-applications/, grouped by employer, with outcomes in that folder’s README. Rule going forward: an application with a passed follow-up date and no reply gets closed and archived in the same week, so this table never overstates what is live.

Club Receptionist Third Space Queen’s Park (premium health club), NW6 Not yet applied Closed — listing expired, not applied Missed. Verified expired on 2026-09-21, Leisurejobs shows a closing date of 15 Sep 2026, not the 9 Oct this dashboard and the search log both carried. It was never applied for, and the luxury-exclusion decision it was waiting on was never made. £30,784, full time permanent, shifts across 05:00 to 23:00, free membership for Vincent plus one valued at over £5,000. Leisurejobs job 5038189. Keep this row as the template for the one fitness-sector track still in scope: reception, not delivery. Third Space is expanding, so the same post should recur. Set up a repeat search rather than waiting for it to surface. Front of house work in a sector Vincent knows, where the ENIC-confirmed Cert III and IV read as credibility rather than as the job itself. The self-described-luxury question still needs answering before the next one appears, because it will decide Third Space, Gymbox and every premium club desk: Third Space self-describes as a luxury health club, and the exclusion rule was written for hotel front office. Settle it now so the next listing is not lost to the same open question. (M decides, then M sources and drafts, V submits)
Fitness Trainer (Level 3 qualified PT) The Gym Group, London Old Street 2026-09-14 Closed — applied 14 Sep, interviewed 16 Sep Employed role with a guaranteed salary and self-chosen contracted hours, plus an optional self-employed PT rental agreement on top (first month rent free, keep 100% of PT earnings). Part time, permanent, zone 1. Level 3 required, met by the ENIC-confirmed Cert IV in Fitness. Posted 7 Sep, no closing date. Funded first aid, free membership for Vincent plus one, holiday and sick pay, pension and share options. Salary figure not published, ask at first contact. Updated 2026-09-14. Listing verified live by direct click-through, closing date confirmed as 6 Oct 2026. CV and cover letter drafted and rendered to PDF at jobs-vincent/active-applications/gym-group-fitness-trainer/, waiting on Vincent to read them and submit. Worth noting against the Quals accordion: this listing asks for a Level 3 qualification and does not ask for REPs or CIMSPA, so it is one of the fitness roles that is not gated on the outstanding registration. Two identical requisitions open at this site, apply to both: JR16937 and JR16938. Accessibility route if the portal is awkward: email CV to recruitment@thegymgroup.com or call 0203 319 4838.
Luggage Porter / Welcome Ambassador W London (Marriott, 5-star), 10 Wardour Street, Soho W1D 6QF Pack ready 2026-09-13 To apply — priority 2 Full time, permanent, job 26100493, Rooms and Guest Services Operations. Duties: first greeting on arrival, luggage transport and storage, assisting guests in and out of vehicles, hotel and local knowledge, Whatever/Whenever service, cross-department liaison with the Welcome Office. No formal qualifications or experience stated, only proven right to work in the UK. No driving requirement, checked against the rule set 13 Sep. Pay not published, ask at first contact. Intentional exception on Michael’s instruction: W is Marriott’s luxury brand, categorised 5-star, so this sits outside the 4-star-and-below rule in the same way the three Mandarin Oriental applications did. Also a re-application: a casual Luggage Porter role at this property was applied for 2026-05-05 and received no response. This is the full-time version of substantially the same job. Marriott careers

Guest Experience Agent Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park 2026-07-15 Closed — no response, follow-up date passed JR-06747, 39 hrs/week, rotating shifts incl. weekends/bank holidays. Front-of-house/reception — the exact category the 5-star exclusion rule targets; Vincent's call to proceed as a second intentional exception at a hotel he's already engaged with. Angle: PT client management + Buff Events front-of-house/cloakroom for guest welcome and multitasking; Cert IV Hospitality for customer service fundamentals. Sales Assistant ASHK (Turkish lifestyle concept store & café), Westfield London 2026-07-13 Closed — no response, follow-up date passed Opening team, permanent contract. Retail + café hybrid role (till, stock, tea/coffee service, tastings). Temp agency shifts (hospitality)Imperial RecruitmentApplied 24 Aug, chase overdueUpdated 2026-09-14. Imperial F&B registration submitted 24 Aug. Still no appointment invite three weeks on, and the chase date of 1 Sep passed without action. Chase on 020 3011 3040. Hamilton Mayday was dropped 2026-08-25: their desks are management and chef roles, not front of house or fitness, so it was never going to produce shifts for Vincent. Imperial is now the only agency in play, which makes the chase the whole of this route.

Connect to Work (supported employment)Local London, via NewhamNot registeredAdded 2026-09-14. Not income itself, a route to it, which is why it belongs here rather than only in a notes file. A free keyworker does the employer outreach, which is the exact step the record shows Vincent cannot start alone. Eligibility is already settled: Newham is one of the nine delivery boroughs, confirmed 2026-07-22, the programme is voluntary and it does not touch benefits. Open since 22 July with no action, which is itself the pattern. Detail and the interest form in jobs-vincent/connect-to-work.md. Michael completes the form alongside Vincent, the way the Talking Therapies referral actually got submitted.
Superseded 2026-09-14. Everything below this line is a snapshot of 2026-07-06 and must not be applied from. It is kept as the record of what the market looked like then, not as a list of live roles. Ten weeks have passed, the lesson at the top of the Job Search Method tab is that listings close within days, and several of these are already known closed. The live shortlist now has one home: jobs-vincent/next-steps.md, which carries the current roles with closing dates and an owner on each. Packs that have been drafted are in jobs-vincent/active-applications/. Where a name below still recurs in search runs, the current entry is in jobs-vincent/job-search-log.md, not here.

Two things below are still true and worth carrying forward rather than losing: Imperial London Hotels remains the most active in-scope employer and is worth re-checking every run, and the fitness rows are still gated on the REPs registration in the Quals accordion above.

5-star properties excluded throughout (rule set 2026-05-25): The Goring, Roseate House London, Hotel Café Royal, Canary Riverside Plaza, The Biltmore Mayfair, Jumeirah, Shangri-La, Mandarin Oriental, Dorchester Collection. Supervisor and management-level roles excluded — entry level only. Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park now has three intentional exceptions (Vincent's call, hotel he's already engaged with): Fitness & Wellness Concierge (30 Jun, fitness/wellness carve-out), Guest Experience Agent (15 Jul, front-of-house), Host — Dinner by Heston Blumenthal (15 Jul, front-of-house).

Link status checked 2026-06-16. Job board listings go stale fast — several links added earlier today were already dead on re-check. Four confirmed-closed roles (Beds and Bars Night Porter, Imperial Bell Room, Marriott County Hall Guest Arrival Expert, Millennium Doorman) have been removed from this list rather than left in with a warning. Two caterer.com listings (Apex, Thistle Marble Arch) show signs of being stale — flagged below. Always re-check the "Apply via" link loads an open application before applying, even for entries marked Active.

Verified live on the Imperial London Hotels hub — 2026-07-06 (freshest run)

The Imperial hub has shrunk to 14 roles, mostly management and back-of-house. Closed since the 2 Jul run and removed below: President Hotel Receptionist, Royal National Day Porter. President Luggage Porter applied 6 Jul — in Active applications. citizenM permanently excluded (Vincent's decision, 6 Jul, two rejections — do not re-add in future runs). Changed since 2026-06-16: the two "Guest Experience Host" listings at The Imperial (job IDs 4912177 and 4836756) marked "Priority apply" on 16 June are no longer on the Imperial London Hotels live vacancy list as of 2026-06-18 — likely filled or closed. For lobby-host style roles, target The Hoxton, Locke, Moxy and Zedwell (see lifestyle brands table below) — citizenM is off the list as of 6 Jul.

Piano performance — where to apply

No named hotel or restaurant pianist vacancies found on job boards as of 2026-06-16 — listings under "piano"/"pianist" on Totaljobs and Caterer skew towards teaching. Direct outreach and gig platforms are the live route, not passive job board search.

REPs / CIMSPA Registration Register of Exercise Professionals UK, or CIMSPA Not started Parked 2026-09-21 Parked 2026-09-21 on Michael’s decision: Vincent is not pursuing PT or instructing roles for now, so this registration has nothing left to unblock. Gym reception, the track that stays open, does not require it. Held ready rather than dropped. Previous note follows. Unblocked by the ENIC confirmation on 2026-05-25 and untouched since. It is the single cheapest unblock on this dashboard and it gates the whole of priority 2: Third Space, PureGym, Nuffield Health, Everlast and Gymbox all state REPs Level 3 or CIMSPA Practitioner as a requirement, and it is named as the blocker against at least six separate leads in job-search-log.md. Until it is done, the fitness track is limited to employers who accept the ENIC letter on its own, which is the reason RUMBLE, Novo Gyms and The Gym Group are the only fitness roles currently in play. It was also absent from next-steps.md entirely until 2026-09-14, which is how it went 16 weeks without being picked up.

ENIC confirmed 2026-05-25, and that confirmation does not expire. Registration with REPs or CIMSPA is parked as of 2026-09-21: it exists to open fitness delivery roles, and those are out of scope for now. Nothing is lost by waiting, and it can be picked up in an afternoon if the position changes.

Positioning — CV & Story

How to present Vincent's background for maximum impact
"I have spent the last three years running my own personal training practice in Melbourne and London, managing private clients through every part of their journey. Before that I completed degrees in Commerce and Analytics. I moved to London at the end of 2025 and I am building my career here. I bring a service-first mindset, strong communication skills, and a genuine interest in the hospitality industry."

This works because it explains the career path honestly, does not apologise for the self-employment, and positions the analytics and commerce background as a strength rather than a mismatch.

Adapt by role

Role typeWhat to emphasiseWhat to de-emphasise
Receptionist / Front Office Client-facing communication, managing relationships, attention to detail, reliability PT or fitness specifics — keep it guest-service focused
Fitness Instructor / PT Qualifications, client results, programme design, professionalism in premium environments BCom/Analytics unless it comes up naturally
Porter / Doorman Physical capability, guest welcome experience, team player, punctuality, warmth Over-qualifying — do not lead with Masters degree. It can worry employers who think you will leave quickly.
F&B / Events Event management background (Rainbow Social, Melbourne Spikers), Buff Events guest experience Analytics background
  • One page for porter/doorman/entry roles. Two pages acceptable for senior or specialist roles.
  • The self-employment entry must read like a real business, not a gap: "Personal Fitness Trainer (Self-employed) — managed a portfolio of private clients in Melbourne and London. Programme design, client retention, and business development."
  • The community roles (Rainbow Social, Melbourne Spikers) should appear under Voluntary / Leadership — they show reliability and initiative outside paid work.
  • Lead with a two-line personal statement tailored to the role type. Do not use a generic one.
  • Do not list all ten applications on one CV. Keep a base CV and tailor the personal statement and skills bullets per role type.
  • Include LinkedIn URL (linkedin.com/in/vincteh/).
  • References: Craig Milligan first, Michael Roberts second (set 2026-09-14). Every CV, no exceptions. Craig is an independent referee from outside the household, so he carries more weight with an employer than Michael, who is Vincent’s partner as well as his HospoSure reference. Contact details for both are in jobs-vincent/vincent-profile.md, deliberately not here.

Conflict resolved 2026-09-14. This formula and the house style in vincent-profile.md disagreed. The formula here said under 250 words and closed with "I would welcome the opportunity to discuss this further". The profile carried a fuller house style set 2026-09-13 with a different close and a full layout spec, and every letter actually written since then follows the profile, running 266 to 287 words. The profile was newer and matched the work, so it wins. It is reproduced below and this is now the single home for it. vincent-profile.md points here rather than restating it.

Three paragraphs, one page. The live packs run 260 to 290 words, so treat that as the range rather than a hard 250.

Never

  • Explain hospitality to a hotel, or generalise about their industry
  • Start a sentence with "And"
  • Claim he applied to this employer rather than others, or imply it is the only place he wants. He is applying widely and it is checkable. Say he likes the philosophy or the company, which is true and does the same job
  • Stack superlative constructions: "I know best", "I like most", "the part I enjoy most". One at most, and usually none
  • Frame with negation, such as "rather than the nearest place with a queue". Same family as the "X, not Y" ban

Where Michael supplies a sentence, use his phrasing verbatim.

Do not apologise for lack of hotel experience. Acknowledge the transition once, briefly, then move on: "My background is in personal training and client services rather than hotel operations, and I am committed to building that foundation here."
  • Headline: "Personal Trainer | Guest Services Professional | London" — not just "Personal Trainer"
  • About section: 3-4 sentences using the core narrative above
  • Open to Work turned on — set to "Hospitality, Guest Services, Fitness" roles in London
  • Certifications section: Cert III + IV (AIPT) listed with dates
  • Volunteer section: Rainbow Social Melbourne, Melbourne Spikers — both listed
  • Skills endorsed: Customer Service, Event Management, Personal Training, Microsoft Office, Data Analysis
  • Profile photo: professional, clear background

Piano — Teaching & Performing

Grade 8 — two parallel income streams, not one

Grade 8 supports two separate routes — teaching and performing — and Vincent does not need to pick one. Both can be pursued at the same time alongside the hotel job search.

Grade 8 is the highest graded level before diploma. In London, a Grade 8 qualified piano teacher can charge £40-65/hr for private lessons. Demand is consistent — parents with school-age children, adult learners, GCSE and A-Level students.

This requires no employer, no visa sponsor, and no registration. It fits the self-employed model already in place from PT work. Set-up time is a few hours. It can run alongside any hotel role or independently while the search continues.

To first enquiry via platforms
  • Create tutor profile on Tutorful — UK's largest platform. List Grade 8 prominently. Set rate, availability, and travel radius.
  • Create profile on Superprof — high London traffic, international learners
  • Apply to MyTutor — good for GCSE Music theory alongside piano
  • Post in local Facebook community groups and Nextdoor: "Piano lessons available — Grade 8 ABRSM qualified, all ages and levels welcome."
  • Add "Piano Teacher" to LinkedIn headline and Open to Work. Add Grade 8 to Certifications.

Peripatetic (visiting) piano teaching at independent and prep schools pays £25-45/hr and offers regular, reliable sessions. Schools near Vincent's home area are the first targets.

Subject: Peripatetic Piano Teacher — Availability

Dear [Name / Director of Music],

I am writing to enquire about peripatetic piano teaching opportunities at [school name]. I am a Grade 8 pianist based in London, available from [date]. I have experience working one-to-one with clients across a range of goals and ages, and I am keen to bring that to a school setting.

I would be happy to send a full CV or arrange a brief call at your convenience.

Kind regards,
Vincent Teh

I am a Grade 8 pianist based in London, offering lessons for all ages and levels — from complete beginners through to ABRSM Grade 8 and GCSE Music.

My background is in one-to-one coaching and I am used to adapting to how each person learns. Lessons are relaxed and practical. I focus on building real enjoyment of the instrument alongside whatever grade or goal you are working towards.

Available for in-person lessons [location] and online via Zoom.

Keep it short and warm. Parents choose tutors based on personality as much as qualification. The Grade 8 credential does the credibility work — the bio just needs to feel approachable.

Vincent performed piano at Dad's funeral and managed his anxiety well throughout. This is the first evidence that live performance, not just teaching, may now be a realistic option alongside the hotel job search.

SettingNotes
Hotel lobby / lounge pianistFits directly with the existing hotel job search. Ask about this in interviews for guest experience roles, some lobby bars hire background pianists for evenings.
Restaurant background pianoHotel restaurants and high end venues sometimes book solo pianists for dinner service.
Weddings and private eventsHigher pay per booking. Build a short demo video and list on platforms such as Bark or Poptop.
Care homes and community eventsLower pressure setting to build performance confidence further before higher stakes bookings.

Suggested next step: keep this low pressure and build up gradually, starting with shorter or smaller settings before larger bookings, given anxiety is still a factor to manage.

Weekly Actions

Minimum viable job search — what to do each week
DayTaskTime
MondayCheck all hotel portals for new postings. Note any new roles in the log.30 min
TuesdayWrite and send 2-3 applications from the shortlist. Tailor cover letter per role.60-90 min
WednesdayFollow up on applications older than 2 weeks. One brief, professional email per role.20 min
ThursdayCheck Caterer.com, Indeed, Leisurejobs for new roles. Add any to the shortlist.30 min
FridayUpdate the application log. Note status changes. Reflect on any feedback received.15 min
Target: 5-8 applications per week minimum. Volume matters at this stage. The goal is to get one foot in the door — any hotel role — and build from there.

Most hotel HR teams receive dozens of applications. A brief follow-up after 10-14 days is professional, not pushy.

Keep it short. One follow-up only per application unless they respond. Do not follow up on roles applied via job boards where no direct contact details are available.

To do now (w/c 21 Sep) — in order

  • 1. Closed: Fitness Trainer (Level 3), The Gym Group, London Old Street. Applied 14 Sep, interviewed 16 Sep, now closed. This was the last of the fitness delivery applications. Recorded 2026-09-21: Vincent is not pursuing personal training or gym floor instructing roles for now. Gym and health club reception stays in scope and should be sourced actively. (M screens future leads against this)
  • 2. Apply: Luggage Porter / Welcome Ambassador, W London, 10 Wardour Street, Soho W1D 6QF. Full time, permanent, job 26100493, listing live. First greeting on arrival, luggage transport and storage, assisting guests in and out of vehicles, local knowledge, and W’s “Whatever/Whenever” service. No formal qualifications or experience required, the only stated requirement is proven right to work in the UK. No driving requirement, checked against the rule set 13 Sep: guests are assisted in and out of vehicles rather than driven. Pay is not published, ask at first contact. CV and cover letter drafted and rendered 13 Sep, waiting on Vincent to read them and submit. Added on Michael’s instruction and it breaks two standing rules, noted here so the exception is visible rather than silent: W is Marriott’s luxury brand and W London is categorised 5-star, and Vincent applied to a casual Luggage Porter role at this same property on 5 May 2026 with no response. (M drafts, V submits) Marriott careers
  • 3. Submit: Guest Experience Porter, The Imperial Hotel, Bloomsbury. £26,916 plus benefits, full or part time, closes 25 Sep, the tightest deadline live. CV and cover letter are drafted and rendered to PDF, waiting on Vincent to read them and press send. Apply via Leisurejobs job 5019435, CV upload capped at 1MB. (M done, V submits)
  • 4. Apply: Doorman, The Imperial Hotel, Bloomsbury. £31,713 plus benefits, 40 hrs across 5 of 7 days, closes 5 Oct. Highest paying front office role found to date and in scope on star rating. Pack drafted and rendered 13 Sep, built around Vincent’s two years’ Singapore Army service as a Guard Duty and Security Trooper (Lance Corporal, Jun 2012 to Jun 2014, weapons handling trained), which surfaced today and had never appeared on any CV. National service leads the experience section. Australian Red Cross first aid, emergency life support and CPR also now listed. SIA Level 2 is desirable rather than required and the letter states plainly that Vincent does not hold it and is willing to get it. Leisurejobs job 5031138. (M drafts, V submits)
  • 5. Parked: Front of House / HIIT Instructor, RUMBLE, Dalston and Fitzrovia. Parked 2026-09-21. The Re.HIIT class coaching is fitness delivery, which is out of scope for now. The front of house half still fits, so revisit if a reception-only post opens there. (no action)
  • 6. Parked: Fitness Instructor, Novo Gyms, Greenwich and Welling. Parked 2026-09-21, gym floor instructing, out of scope. (no action)
  • 7. Attend on spec: recruitment open day, The Cura Hotel Kensington (Tribute Portfolio by Marriott, 4-star), Earls Court, Tuesday 15 September. Named roles are supervisory and above, so out of scope on the non-management rule, but open days recruit across levels and a Night Auditor event was referenced for the same date at the same property. Costs an afternoon. Confirm address and time before travelling. (M confirms details, V attends)
  • 8. Apply: Host / Hostess, Florattica rooftop bar, Canopy by Hilton London City, Clerkenwell EC1. Best result of the Hilton lifestyle sweep: guest-facing, non-management, and a lifestyle brand that hires on personality rather than 5-star pedigree. Caterer job107856190. Also open at the same property: Food and Beverage Assistants (job107905607), which maps onto the Cert IV bar operations and RSA units. Pay and closing dates unverified, Caterer detail pages block automated fetch, so browse manually before applying. (M drafts, V submits)
  • 9. Temp agency registration. Still open and now overdue since 2 Sep. Imperial Recruitment applied 24 Aug, no registration appointment yet. Chase on 020 3011 3040. Bridge income is still zero. (M chases)
  • 10. Decide: does the self-described-luxury exclusion apply to non-hotel venues. The Third Space Queen’s Park Club Receptionist role this was blocking (£30,784) expired on 15 Sep and was missed, verified 2026-09-21, which self-describes as a luxury health club. If the rule is about hotel front office it stays in, if it is about the working environment it goes. Now the priority call on this list, because the Third Space Club Receptionist role is exactly the gym reception shape that remains in scope after the 2026-09-21 rescope. (M decides)
Fitness track rescoped, recorded 2026-09-21. Vincent is not pursuing personal training or gym floor instructing roles at this time. Gym and health club reception remains in scope and is worth sourcing actively. RUMBLE, Novo Gyms and the REPs or CIMSPA registration are parked rather than dropped, and the ENIC confirmation keeps its value on a reception CV. The earlier shift recorded on 2026-09-13, which moved the default from self-employed PT to salaried fitness roles, is superseded by this: the self-employed PT route produced no income, and the salaried delivery route is now closed too. Screen PT and instructing leads out before they reach a shortlist.

Standing

  • Run the daily spoken reps from the confidence plan (jobs-vincent/confidence-plan.md), 10 min, straight after gym (V)
  • Daily body-doubled application session with Michael, post-gym, 20 to 30 min, targets pre-picked from the list above, no browsing (M+V)
  • Connect to Work: eligibility is settled, Newham is a delivery borough (confirmed 2026-07-22). The outstanding step is the interest form itself, which Michael completes sitting alongside Vincent (M+V)

Quals — action first

  • Register with REPs / CIMSPA using ENIC confirmation letter — unlocks hotel wellness and gym roles, and strengthens the live Mandarin Oriental application

Akatoki — closed, no offer (2026-06-08)

  • Akatoki rejected — referral from Nacho Fernandez did not convert, no feedback given. Property-specific prep in that section is now reference-only.
  • Carry the talking points forward — the ADAM, Rainbow Social, and Airbnb stories built for Akatoki are now generalised in the "anchor stories" section above and apply to any front-of-house interview
  • Prepare 3 STAR stories per interview, picked to match the question: one PT (client relationship), one ADAM or Buff Events (arrivals/belongings), one Rainbow Social (ambassador/guest connection or board-level conflict handling)

Next interview — generic prep checklist

  • Research the property before the interview — brand, standards, what guests/staff say on TripAdvisor and Glassdoor
  • Confirm outfit: smart professional, clean shoes, well-groomed — presentation starts at the interview

Job Search Method

How to run each search, where to look, and how to confirm a listing is active
Instructions for the assistant running this search. This section is written as a procedure for an LLM (or anyone running the search) to follow, in order, every time a search run is requested. Do not skip steps. Do not invent listings. Only report a listing as active if it has been checked against the rules below.
  1. Read the rules below before starting.
  2. Work through Steps 1 to 6 in order, once per week, unless told otherwise.
  3. For each listing found, confirm it against the "Rules" checks before including it.
  4. Log every confirmed-active listing using the format in "How to log what you find", then move it to the Pipeline tab shortlist.
  5. Never duplicate portal or job board URLs outside this section — this is the single source of truth for where to search.

Consolidated from job-search-log.md and the closed application packs, 2026-09-14. Each lesson is a rule, not a note. Outcomes and the packs themselves are in jobs-vincent/previous-applications/.

The gap is at interview, not on paper. 29 applications produced interviews at citizenM (second round), FitnessLab (first round), Akatoki and Marriott Canary Wharf (third round), and zero offers. The CV and cover letters are working. More applications alone will not close this. Interview rehearsal is the higher-leverage investment, and the named feedback is specific: FitnessLab said Vincent lacked confidence and that clients could pick it up. Work confidence-plan.md before every interview, not only before the big ones.
LessonWhere it came fromThe rule now
Do not build a pack before the listing is verified and Vincent has committed to submit Four full CV and cover letter packs were drafted and never sent: Chelsea Harbour doorman, Fitness First, Daisy Green, hotel finance. A fifth, St Regis, was drafted then ruled out of scope Verify the listing is live, check it against the exclusion rules, then get Vincent’s yes. Only then draft. Drafting is not the bottleneck, submitting is, so effort spent drafting ahead of a decision is effort lost
Listings close in days, sometimes in 48 hours Two Imperial Guest Experience Host roles marked priority apply on 16 Jun were gone by 18 Jun. Westpoint, the Royal National receptionist and the President day porter all closed mid-search Apply within 48 hours of finding a role, or accept it is probably gone. A shortlist entry more than a week old must be re-verified before any work goes into it
Snippet-only leads are not leads WebFetch was blocked for sixteen consecutive search runs from 14 Jul to 10 Sep. Six runs of Travelodge night reception leads were contradicted by Travelodge’s own careers site on 13 Sep, which showed management roles only in London Anything sourced from a search snippet is Status: Unverified and stays off the shortlist until someone opens the listing. When automated fetch is down, click-through verification becomes a manual step, not a skipped one
No response by the follow-up date means closed Westpoint ran 18 days with no reply before Vincent closed it. Eleven further applications sat as Applied with follow-up dates months past Set a follow-up date on every application. When it passes with no reply, close it, move the pack to previous-applications/ and take it out of the active count. A stale pipeline hides how few live opportunities there actually are
Check the reference block at point of reuse Michael left Marriott end of Jun 2026. Older tailored CVs still carried the marriott.com address, which no longer works. One of them, the Sea Lanes CV, had already gone out master-cv.html carries the current HospoSure reference. Tailor from the master every time. Never copy an old tailored CV forward without re-reading the reference block
A referral is not a shortcut The Akatoki luggage porter application came through a referral from Nacho Fernandez and was still rejected on 2026-06-08 with no feedback Treat referrals as one more application, prepared to the same standard. Do not let a referral displace the rest of the week’s volume
Screen for a driving licence Confirmed 2026-09-13 that Vincent has no licence. Porter and bell roles at large hotels often include operating property vehicles Standing exclusion. Check the listing for a driving requirement before it reaches a shortlist
Know which exclusions have exceptions The 4 star and below rule was set 2026-08-23, then waived three times for Mandarin Oriental and once for W London on Michael’s instruction. The fitness and wellness track was always exempt The rule covers front office roles at hotels. Fitness and wellness roles are in scope at any tier. Michael can waive it case by case, and every waiver is recorded in the pipeline entry as an intentional exception
Some employers are done citizenM rejected Vincent twice, including after a second interview. He closed it permanently on 2026-07-06 Do not re-add citizenM to shortlists or search runs. Imperial London Hotels is the opposite case: recruiting continuously, four applications logged, always worth re-checking
Caterer.com detail pages block automated fetch Four current Hilton and Canopy leads carry a manual verification caveat for this reason Caterer leads need a manual browse for pay and closing date before they reach the pipeline. Noted in sources.md alongside the portal list
Only apply to listings you have confirmed are open. Job boards index pages stay live long after individual listings expire. Never apply from a search results page — always click through to the actual listing and confirm the application button is present and active.

Step 3 — Imperial London Hotels (separate check, multiple open roles)

Imperial runs a new lifestyle property (The Imperial, Bloomsbury) opening mid-2026 and has been actively recruiting across multiple roles simultaneously. Check their page each week as new listings appear.

What to searchURL
All Imperial London Hotels jobshospitalityjobsuk.com — Imperial London Hotels

Step 4 — Glassdoor culture check (before applying, not during search)

Before writing a cover letter, check the employer on Glassdoor. Read 3-5 recent employee reviews. Look for: management quality, training offered, team culture. This shapes the cover letter "why this property" paragraph and surfaces anything worth knowing before interview.

Step 6 — Temp agencies (hotel and catering work)

Temp work provides income and live hotel experience while permanent applications are pending. See the Pipeline tab for the full list of agencies and current registration priority — that is the master list, kept current there.

After each search run, add confirmed-active listings to the Shortlist accordion on the Pipeline tab. For each one record:

Remove listings from the shortlist as soon as they are applied to (move to Pipeline active applications) or confirmed closed. Never let stale entries build up — the shortlist is only useful if every entry on it is genuinely open.

Interview Prep

Key messages, likely questions, and how to answer them
This tab is now the highest-leverage part of the dashboard (recorded 2026-09-14). 29 applications have produced four interviews and no offers: citizenM to second round, Marriott Canary Wharf to third, FitnessLab to first, Akatoki to application. A CV that reaches a third interview is not the problem. The conversion step is, and the only feedback anyone has actually given says so in as many words. FitnessLab: lacked confidence, clients could pick up on it. Treat rehearsal as a standing weekly commitment rather than something done in the days before an interview, because at four interviews in six months there is not enough interview volume to learn on the job.

Where the prep lives. Notes are filed with the application they were written for. The Imperial prep and worked Q&A are at jobs-vincent/previous-applications/imperial-room-service/ and cover Imperial London Hotels as an employer, their AI screening format, and luggage and guest-property answers, all of which apply directly to the two live Imperial applications. General front office prep, taken through three rounds, is at jobs-vincent/previous-applications/marriott-park-tower-and-profile/marriott-canary-wharf-interview-prep.md. The citizenM scenarios at previous-applications/citizenm/ are employer-specific but the answers generalise to any guest experience interview.
New companion documents (2026-07-02): jobs-vincent/confidence-plan.md — the working plan for the one gap named in actual rejection feedback (FitnessLab: "lacked confidence"). Evidence bank, undersell audit, and daily 10-minute spoken reps. Open it before every application and interview. Also jobs-vincent/reference/online-transformation-coach-guide.md — role guide for online transformation coach positions (own physique standard, 1-1 coaching, daily client communication, tailored programming) for interview prep on that role type.

I am a natural people person. Rainbow Social ambassador — the role was specifically about making new people feel welcomed and connected. Airbnb hosting in London — greeting guests, orienting them to the space, making them feel at home. Buff Events front-of-house — first point of contact for 200+ attendees.
I have genuine guest-facing experience. Airbnb hosting is directly analogous to hotel work — guests arrive not knowing the space, rely on you to orientate them, and leave reviews based entirely on how looked after they felt. Rainbow Social and Buff Events involved welcoming, check-in, and guest management in live environments.
I am here for the long term. Moved to London permanently December 2025. Building a life and a career here. Not passing through.

The mental block to clear first: you think "event check-in" and "Airbnb" aren't hotel experience. They are. An inspector or hiring manager doesn't score whether you've worked in a hotel before — they score whether you greet warmly, handle belongings with care, use names, and make people feel looked after. You have done all of that. These translations are general-purpose — they work for any front-of-house interview, not one specific property.

Your experienceWhat you actually didHotel equivalent — use anywhere
ADAM event staffGreeted people at the door, took their belongings, stored them safely, returned them correctly at the end of the nightGuest services / porter / cloakroom: receive, log, store, return belongings with full accountability

Airbnb co-hostingGuests arrive not knowing the space, tired from travel, relying on you to orient them — you ran that moment and they reviewed you on itRoom orientation and departure: the exact touchpoints any guest-experience role is judged on

ADAM — belongings and accountability

"I ran the check-in at ADAM — a weekly social night. Part of that was taking guests' belongings, making sure they were stored correctly, and getting them back to the right person at the end of the night. You're responsible for someone's things from the moment they hand them over. Get it wrong and it defines their whole evening. That accountability — making sure nothing gets lost, nothing gets confused — is exactly what I'd bring to a guest services or porter role."

ADAM — handling the rush at the door

"Doors at ADAM had a real rush in the first half hour — a queue of people arriving at once, all needing to be checked in and have their belongings logged correctly. The pressure is to speed up and start cutting corners, but that's exactly when mistakes happen and someone's night gets ruined. I kept my own system simple and consistent so that under pressure I didn't have to think — I just followed it. Busy arrival periods in a hotel are the same problem: keep the standard up when the volume goes up."

ADAM — fixing a mix-up calmly

"More than once someone came back at the end of the night convinced their bag or jacket was missing, when really it had just been logged slightly differently. The instinct in that moment is to get defensive, because it feels like an accusation. I learned to stay calm, walk them through exactly what I remembered doing, and go looking with them rather than making them wait. Every time, we found it, and they left relieved rather than angry. That's service recovery — staying composed when a guest is upset about something that's technically not your fault, and still making it right."

ADAM — recognising regulars

"It was a weekly night, so a lot of the same faces came back. I made a point of remembering names and small details — what they usually had with them, who they usually came with — so that by the time they reached me it felt less like a checkpoint and more like someone was actually glad to see them. People noticed that, and it's a big part of why they kept coming back. That's exactly what repeat guests in a hotel respond to — being recognised, not just processed."

Rainbow Social — spotting the person who feels out of place

"At Rainbow Social I was an ambassador specifically for new members. Someone walking into a room full of people they don't know yet is nervous even if they don't show it. My job was to spot that person first, go to them before they had to approach anyone, and make them feel like they were supposed to be there. I didn't wait for them to look lost. That's the same instinct front-of-house needs — you move towards the guest, not wait for them to need you."

Rainbow Social — turning a one-off visitor into a regular

"There were people who came to one event, hovered near the edges, and looked like they wouldn't come back. I'd go and talk to them properly — not just a hello, but actually find something in common, introduce them to one or two others who'd get on with them, and check in with them again before the night ended. Several of those people became regulars, and a couple ended up getting involved in running events themselves. That's the long-term version of guest care — the difference between someone visiting once and someone choosing to come back."

Rainbow Social — handling a disagreement as a board member

"Being on the board meant sitting in on decisions where people disagreed, sometimes strongly, about how an event or a policy should run. My role wasn't to win the argument — it was to hear both sides properly, find the bit they actually agreed on, and build the decision from there so nobody felt steamrolled. That's the same skill as defusing a tense moment with a guest — you're not trying to be right, you're trying to get everyone to a place where they feel heard and the situation moves forward."

Rainbow Social — running an event end to end

"Part of being on the board was planning events from scratch — booking the venue, briefing volunteers, working out timings, and being the person who actually had to make it run smoothly on the night when something inevitably changed last minute. You learn to hold the whole picture in your head while still being present with whoever's in front of you. That's the balance front-of-house needs too — knowing what's happening across the whole floor while still giving the person at your desk your full attention."

Melbourne Spikers — supporting teammates through a team conflict

"One of our teammates was being so competitive it tipped into toxic — constant criticism in practice that was dragging the whole group down. A few of the others were genuinely close to dropping out of the team that was about to play in the tournament, and they came to me about it. I listened properly, took it seriously, and brought that into the conversation when we sat down as a group to work out what to do. It wasn't an easy call, but we agreed he needed to sit out for a bit, and someone had that conversation with him. Once that happened, I made a point of helping bring the mood back up — and it worked. Not only did we stay together as a team, we went on to win the tournament that nearly fell apart before it even started."

Use this one for: "tell me about a time you helped resolve conflict" / "describe supporting a colleague through something difficult" / "how do you handle a group that isn't working well together." Note what your actual role was — the teammates trusted you enough to come to you first, and the harder, less visible part (rebuilding the mood afterward) was yours too. You did not have the confrontation conversation, and the story does not need you to have — being the person people trust to listen, and the person who helps put things back together, is its own real skill.

Buff Events — keeping the queue informed when the system went down

"At one event the check-in system went down right at opening, and a queue started forming fast. I was the one who took the call about it while the organiser worked on getting it back up. While that was being sorted, I made sure the people right in front of me weren't just left standing there wondering what was going on — I told them honestly what had happened. I didn't have a time estimate to give them, so I didn't make one up — I just made sure they weren't guessing. It's a small thing, but nobody likes being left in the dark, and that was the part I could control in the moment. Once the system came back up, we got through the queue without any further issues."

Use this one for: "tell me about a time something went wrong" / "how do you handle pressure" / "describe good guest communication." Note: this is the true version, kept deliberately modest — it survives any follow-up question because there's nothing in it to defend.

Airbnb co-hosting — "what is your hotel experience?"

"Since moving to London, my partner and I have been co-hosting our place on Airbnb — sharing our home with guests. We welcome them ourselves, give them a proper tour, make sure they've got everything they need, and keep the place clean and comfortable for the whole stay. I don't have to guess whether that's working — the guests tell us. They've called us kind, welcoming, and friendly. They've said the place was clean and comfortable. One guest wrote that staying with us felt like staying with friends, and that we were genuinely hospitable. That's not me describing myself — that's what guests chose to write down after they'd left. And that's exactly what a hotel guest is rating you on too: did they feel looked after, and would they want to come back."

Why this one is strong: it doesn't ask the interviewer to take your word for it — it hands them someone else's. "Hospitable," "felt like staying with friends," "kind and welcoming" are guests' own words, unprompted, written after they'd already left. That is third-party evidence of exactly the quality a front-of-house role is built on. Use it whenever you're tempted to undersell — the proof is not your opinion of yourself, it is on record from the people you looked after.

The through-line across all of these: you have consistently been the person who handles other people's arrivals, belongings, and awkward in-between moments — and takes that responsibility seriously, under pressure, more than once. That is the job. Pick the story that matches the question being asked rather than reaching for the same one every time.

"That is a fair question. Since moving to London I have been hosting guests through Airbnb — and that experience is closer to hotel work than most people realise. Guests arrive not knowing the space, they rely on you entirely for their first impression, and the reviews they leave are based on how looked after they felt. Before that, I spent years on the welcome and guest experience side of large community events in Melbourne — check-in, orientating new people, making sure nobody feels lost. I am coming in ready to learn the hotel-specific systems. What I do not need to be taught is how to make a person feel looked after from the moment they arrive."

"I am originally from Singapore, studied in Melbourne, and moved to London at the end of 2025. Since being here I have been hosting guests through Airbnb — welcoming people, showing them around, making sure they feel at home — and that experience made me realise how much I enjoy the guest-facing side of things. Before that I spent a few years in community event work in Melbourne, running the welcoming and guest experience side of large social events. I am a natural people person and hospitality feels like the right industry to build a career in."

"Hotels are one of the few industries where the product is entirely about how you make someone feel. I find that genuinely exciting. I want to work in an environment where service quality is the standard and the team around me shares that commitment."

If it is a luxury property specifically: "I have spent three years working with clients who expect the best and I understand what that standard means in practice. I want to work somewhere that holds itself to the same level."

Use the STAR format: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Pick one specific story — not a general claim. Best options:

  • Airbnb: A guest arrived late, tired, or with a problem — how you handled it, what you did, and how they left feeling. Reviews are the result.
  • Rainbow Social: Someone arrived at an event not knowing anyone — how you spotted that, went over, made introductions, and made them part of the room. The result: they came back.
  • Buff Events: A guest had a booking issue at check-in during a busy arrival period — how you stayed calm, resolved it quickly, and kept the queue moving without making them feel like a problem.

End with the result: what the guest/person said, whether they came back, whether they left a positive review.

"In London, building a hospitality career. I want to develop depth in front office operations and progress into a supervisory role over the next two to three years. I am committed to this industry and this city."

Do not mention wanting to return to Australia or go back to full-time PT — even if true, it is not what the interviewer needs to hear.

BrandAkatoki Hotel London — part of Seibu Prince Hotels, a Japanese luxury group. "Akatoki" means dawn in Japanese — the promise of tranquility and the start of something new. This philosophy should come through in service: calm, attentive, unhurried.

Why you appliedNacho Fernandez mentioned it — he spoke warmly about the people there. Looked into the brand after and was drawn to the Japanese philosophy behind it — the Akatoki idea and the calm, welcoming feeling that carries through into how the hotel presents itself.

Role-specific questions they will likely ask

"A friend of mine, Nacho Fernandez, told me about it. He mentioned the people there are really lovely and that stuck with me. I looked into it after and really liked what Akatoki is about. The Japanese background, the whole idea of the dawn and that calm, welcoming feeling — it comes through in how the hotel presents itself and that's something I want to be part of."

"Yes — Forbes assess across hundreds of criteria and the key thing they look for beyond the technical is whether the service feels genuine. You can train someone to open a door in 4 seconds, but you cannot train someone to make a person feel like they matter. That is the part I am already comfortable with."

"Very much so. I am a personal trainer — physical fitness is not just a requirement for me, it is something I actively maintain as part of my lifestyle. I understand the demands of a full shift on your feet and I have no concerns about that side of it."

"Completely. I am available immediately and fully flexible across the week. I understand hospitality does not stop on weekends and I have no issue with that."

Question to ask them

"The brand induction and staff stay are a great touch — how soon after starting do new team members typically do that experience, and does it cover the London property or other Seibu Prince hotels internationally?"

"I would acknowledge it straight away without making excuses — guests do not need reasons, they need to feel heard. Then I would tell them exactly what I am doing to resolve it and give them a realistic timeframe. In my PT work I have handled situations where a client was frustrated — a session running late, a venue issue — and the response that works every time is to be calm, direct, and take action rather than talk about it."

"First, stay calm in front of the guest — they need to see someone in control. Check the bell room thoroughly including any overflow areas. If it is not there, escalate to my supervisor immediately and loop in the front desk. Keep the guest informed throughout — I would not disappear and leave them waiting. And in future, that is exactly why tagging and logging every piece of luggage properly matters from the moment it comes in."

"It starts before they say a word. Move towards them, not wait for them to come to you. Make eye contact and smile before you open your mouth. Take the bag before they have to ask. Use their name if you have it. I have been doing exactly this as an Airbnb host — guests arrive not knowing the space, sometimes tired or anxious from a journey, and your job in those first 30 seconds is to make them feel like everything is taken care of. That same instinct is what I brought to event welcome roles — reading the room, spotting who needs orienting, making people feel expected."

"Communicating clearly and not waiting to be asked. If I can see a colleague is busy with a guest and another guest needs help, I step in. If I am handing off a situation to someone else I give them everything they need to carry it — the guest's name, what the issue is, what I have already done. In my event work, that kind of handoff communication was essential — you could not leave someone in the dark mid-event."

Day before

  • Read the hotel's "About" and "Our Story" pages — note the brand values and any specific language they use about hospitality
  • Check Glassdoor for staff reviews — what do current staff say about management and culture?
  • Read 10 recent TripAdvisor reviews — what do guests praise most? This tells you what the hotel values.
  • Know the star rating and any awards (Forbes Travel Guide stars, AA Rosettes)
  • Know the parent group (e.g. Seibu Prince Hotels for Akatoki) and their expansion plans if mentioned publicly
  • Plan the route — know exactly how to get there, how long it takes, and a backup route
  • Confirm what you are wearing — clean, pressed, professional. Suit or smart trousers and shirt minimum. Shoes polished.
  • Re-read the job description — know the three key duties they listed and have an answer for each
  • Prepare two or three specific stories from your experience using STAR format (Situation, Task, Action, Result)
  • Prepare one strong question to ask them at the end

Morning of

  • Leave early — arrive 10 minutes before, not 1 minute before
  • Eat beforehand — low blood sugar affects recall and confidence
  • Do not check social media or stressful messages in the hour before — protect headspace
  • Read the Three Messages section above on the way there — anchor your core narrative
AreaWhat to do
PaceSlow down. Nerves make people speak faster. Take a breath before answering. One second of pause looks considered, not uncertain.
Eye contactMaintain natural eye contact — not staring, not looking away constantly. If there are two interviewers, address your answer to the one who asked but glance to the other so both feel included.
Body languageSit up straight, feet on the floor, hands relaxed on the table or in your lap. Do not cross arms. Do not fidget with a pen or phone.
Silence from themIf they pause or nod without responding after you answer, do not fill it with more talking. You have answered. Let it sit. Silence from them is thinking, not disapproval.
Flat face / neutral expressionSome interviewers show no warmth — it is their style, not a signal about your performance. Keep going as though the energy is good. Do not mirror their flatness.
If you forget mid-answer"Let me think about that for a moment" is completely acceptable. Pause, collect your thought, continue. It reads as considered, not blank.
When you don't know somethingBe honest: "I haven't worked in a hotel before so I'd be learning that on the job — but here's what I'd draw on..." Turn it into a bridge, not an apology.
EnergyThis is a guest-facing role. They are assessing how you come across, not just what you say. Warm, engaged, present — not performing, but not flat either. Be the version of you that welcomes a friend.

Dear [Name],

Thank you for taking the time to meet with me today. I enjoyed learning more about Akatoki and the team, and I left feeling even more enthusiastic about the role.

I am very keen to be considered further and happy to provide anything additional you need.

Kind regards,
Vincent Teh

Keep it short. One paragraph. The goal is to be remembered positively — not to add new information. Send it to the person who interviewed you if you have their direct email, otherwise to the HR contact from the application.

If you do not hear back

Wait 5-7 business days after the interview before following up. One follow-up only. After that, move on — not because it is over, but because the energy is better spent on the next opportunity.

  • Read the hotel's "About" page — note its positioning (luxury, lifestyle, heritage, etc.)
  • Check Glassdoor for staff reviews — understand the culture before you walk in
  • Read recent TripAdvisor reviews — what do guests praise and complain about? This tells you what matters to management.
  • Know the star rating and any awards (AA Rosettes, Forbes Travel Guide stars)
  • Know who owns or operates the property (brand vs. independent)
  • Prepare one specific question about the role or team — shows genuine interest

Mindset Notes

Patterns to watch for and how to work with them
Active confidence programme (added 2026-07-02): this tab is the defence — the daily practice that builds visible confidence lives in jobs-vincent/confidence-plan.md: evidence bank, undersell audit, daily spoken reps, weekly mock interview, exposure ladder. Open it before every application and interview.
PatternHow it shows up in job searchCounter-move
Rejection Sensitivity (RSD) Reads no response or a generic decline as personal rejection. May pull back from applying after one disappointment. Treat no response as noise, not signal. Most applications go unanswered regardless of quality. Keep the weekly volume up and do not attach meaning to silence.
ADHD Harder to sustain effort on repetitive tasks (job boards, form-filling). May go quiet between bursts of activity. Use the weekly routine above to structure effort into short defined blocks. Batch similar tasks (all portal checks on Monday, all applications on Tuesday). Do not try to do everything in one sitting.
Inferiority comparison Sees other candidates as more qualified or more "hotel" and discounts his own strengths. Before any application or interview, re-read the Strengths section. Verify against facts. Most hotel front office applicants do not have a BCom or a Masters — that is real, not imagined.
Negative recall bias After a rejection like citizenM, the search can feel like a failure even with 10 active applications still open. Reframe: citizenM reached second interview with no hotel experience. That is a strong result. Keep a short list of what has gone well.

What this means in practice (moved here from vincent-profile.md, 2026-09-14, so the patterns and the handling instructions sit together):

  • When Vincent says "I wasn't doing well" or "I don't think I was good at it", verify against facts first, not feelings.
  • When he compares himself to others, redirect to what he actually did, not what they seemed to do.
  • When he cannot recall positives, prompt with specific questions. They are there.
  • His self-assessment is a starting point to interrogate, not a verdict.

These are patterns specific to the interview room — different from the job search patterns above. Know them in advance so they do not catch you off guard.

PatternHow it shows up in the roomCounter-move
RSD — neutral interviewer face Interviewer does not smile or nod. Vincent reads this as "they do not like me" and starts shrinking — shorter answers, less energy, breaks eye contact. Before walking in, decide: a flat interviewer face means nothing. It is their style. Keep giving the same energy regardless. The decision is made on the whole interview, not their expression in the moment.
RSD — silence after an answer Interviewer pauses before the next question. Vincent interprets silence as disapproval and starts adding qualifiers or backtracking on what he just said. Say your answer. Stop. Let the silence be theirs to fill. The answer you gave was the answer — you do not need to append it.
ADHD — long or multi-part questions Interviewer asks a complex question. Vincent loses track of part two while answering part one, or over-answers part one to avoid admitting he missed something. It is fine to say: "Could you repeat the second part of that?" or "Let me answer the first part first." Asking for clarification reads as attentive, not confused.
Inferiority — comparing to other candidates In a waiting area or group setting, Vincent sees someone who looks "more hotel" and writes himself off before the interview begins. You do not know their story. You know yours. The person you see is not the competition — the interview is. Get in the room and do the interview.
Negative recall bias — going blank on positives Asked "tell me about a time you..." and the mind goes empty. Nothing comes up. Panic sets in. Prepare 3 specific STAR stories before any interview — one from PT work, one from events, one from Rainbow Social or Buff Events. These are your anchors. When blank, go to the nearest anchor and bridge to the question.
Caught off guard — spontaneous calls A recruiter or hotel contact calls unexpectedly with no warning — for a screening chat, a follow-up, or a decision. Taking it on the spot means going in cold: no notes, no stories lined up, no headspace. It is completely fine to say: "Thanks for calling — I'm not in the right place to talk properly right now, can we schedule a time later today or tomorrow?" That single sentence buys the prep window. It reads as organised, not evasive — and a planned five minutes beats an unplanned one every time.
The FitnessLab feedback was "lacked confidence — clients could pick up on it." That is useful. It means the gap is not knowledge or skill, it is visible confidence. The counter to that is preparation so thorough that you already know you can answer whatever comes up. Confidence is not a feeling you wait for — it is what happens when you are well-prepared and the interview starts.
Lesson from Akatoki (rejected 2026-06-08): the call came in spontaneously and there was no time to prepare before taking it. Next time any hotel or recruiter calls out of nowhere — screening, follow-up, or outcome — ask to schedule it for a set time, even just an hour later. Use that window to glance at the anchor stories and the property notes. Going in prepared is a choice, not a circumstance.

Lost a paid cleaning job (apartment turnover) after guest complaints. Before starting, Vincent had proactively asked the employer (a friend) for a task list — the list itself was incomplete (missed things like wiping glass, clearing bathtub scum), and that gap is what caused the complaints, not a lack of effort on Vincent's side.

Key insight: asking for a task list is the passive version of proactive — it assumes the requester's list is complete. The actual proactive move is assuming any given list is incomplete and building the missing structure yourself: ask what "done well" means specifically, not just what needs doing.
SituationReframe / rule going forward
Starting new work (job, gig, freelance, PT client) with only a task list Ask what "done well" or "clean" means specifically, and whether there's anything expected beyond what's written down.
No documented standard exists, or the one given is incomplete Create the checklist yourself, or supplement the existing one. Protects Vincent (clear record of what was agreed) and reads as added value to the employer/client — reusable as a standard checklist to bring proactively to new clients rather than waiting to be handed one.
Impulse to cover unpaid extra shifts out of guilt after something goes wrong Occasional goodwill is fine. If meeting the expected standard requires consistently working beyond paid hours, that is a scope/pay mismatch to flag early — not something to quietly absorb.
Any new shift or task going forward Ask upfront: "Beyond the usual, is there anything specific you want me to focus on?"

The dread felt about the unpaid make-up shift traced back to a childhood pattern of extra work done "because I have to," not the job itself or fear of judgment. Current reality is doing it "because I choose to, out of care for a friend."

Update 2026-07-12: the cleaning work ended w/c 6 Jul. The standards gap was never closed, and the arrangement finished. Two things are both true: the outcome stings, and the diagnosis above still holds. The failure mode was an undefined standard, not effort or character. The rules in this table are exactly what prevents a repeat in the next role, and hotels solve this problem for you: housekeeping and front office run on explicit written standards, checklists and training, which is a far better fit than an informal gig with an incomplete task list. Practical effect: bridge income is now zero, so temp agency registration (Imperial Recruitment, Hamilton Mayday) moves to this week's top action alongside the application sessions.
ThoughtReframe
"I wasn't good enough for citizenM." You reached the second interview against candidates with hotel backgrounds. The outcome was not a reflection of your quality — it was one employer's call on fit at that moment.
"I have no hotel experience so no one will hire me." The entire shortlist in the Pipeline tab contains roles that explicitly state training provided or no hotel experience required. The market for entry front-of-house in London is large.
"Other people in interviews seem more confident than me." Confidence in an interview is often just familiarity with the format. It does not mean better performance. Focus on what you are saying, not how others appear.
"I haven't had a response — they must not want me." Hotel HR teams process hundreds of applications. Non-response is the default, not a judgment. The only reliable signal is a direct rejection or a response of any kind.
"I didn't really do anything in those roles — there's nothing worth telling them." Every story in the Anchor Stories section came from ordinary shifts: checking coats at a door, greeting strangers at a social night, sitting on a community board. None of it felt remarkable while it was happening. That is exactly what a good interview story looks like — not a highlight reel, just a specific moment where someone left better off because you were the one there. The bar was never "impressive." It was "true and specific." You clear that bar more often than the feeling tells you.
When the mind goes blank on "what did I actually do": that question is too big and it always comes back empty — it is asking you to judge your own significance, and the inferiority pattern will answer "nothing" every time. Ask a smaller, answerable question instead: "what's one moment where a specific person walked away better off because I was the one standing there?" One person. One moment. That is the exact size of a STAR story — and it is a question you can actually answer. You just answered it eight times over for ADAM and Rainbow Social alone (see Anchor Stories above). The material was always there. The block was the size of the question you were asking yourself.
  • Moved to a new city and started a job search from scratch in under 6 months.
  • 29 applications submitted across hotels, fitness clubs, retail and hospitality brands (figure updated 2026-09-14, it read "15+" when this list was written).
  • Four interviews reached from those 29, including a second round at citizenM and a third round at Marriott Canary Wharf. Reaching a third interview against experienced candidates, with no hotel experience on the CV, is a real result and it is evidence the CV works.
  • Right to work, the visa route to December 2028, and permission to be self-employed all confirmed 2026-09-13, closing a question that had sat open with a "to confirm" note since June.
  • Two years of Singapore Army service as a Guard Duty and Security Trooper surfaced 2026-09-13 and had never appeared on any CV. It is now the lead experience on a purpose-built doorman pack.
  • Reached second interview at citizenM — a modern lifestyle hotel with high application volume — with no prior hotel experience on the CV.
  • ENIC confirmed 2026-05-25 — Cert III + IV (AIPT) comparability accepted. Proactive step most applicants do not take.
  • Akatoki Hotel London: reached application via a personal referral, rejected 2026-06-08. Listed here as ground covered rather than a win, and corrected 2026-09-14 because this line still read as an active opportunity fifteen weeks after it closed.
  • Multiple CV versions tailored per role type. Master CV rewritten to read as guest-facing FOH experience throughout.
  • Mapped the London hotel job market systematically: portals, job boards, shortlist, tracking log.

This is not a search that is failing. It is a search that has not landed yet. The difference matters.
